The music of John Allemeier has been described as having a “sweet sense of mystery” by Fanfare and as being “rapturous” by the American Record Guide. His music has been programmed on international venues such as the Frankfurter Kunstlerclub (Germany), 3rd Rencontres Musiques Nouvelles (France), Festival Internacional de Percusiones (Mexico), Russia-America: Music of the XXI Century at the Moscow Conservatory, the Seoul International Computer Music Festival (South Korea), the Brazilian Symposium on Computer Music, the International Double Reed Society, ClarinetFest (International Clarinet Society), and the International Society of Bassist Convention; and on national festivals such as Piccolo Spoleto, the 5th Annual Festival of Contemporary Music in San Francisco, and the Spark Festival in Minneapolis; on national conferences of the Society of Composers, the Society for Electro Acoustic Music in the United States, National Association of Composers in the United States, and the College Music Society.
Allemeier’s music has been performed throughout the United States and Europe by professional and collegiate ensembles such as Fresh Ink, Low and Lower, Madison Park String Quartet, Duo XXI, Due East, the Petrella Ensemble, the University of Iowa Center for New Music, the University of Iowa Graduate Chamber Orchestra, Oberlin Percussion Group, the Texas Christian University Percussion Ensemble, the University of Illinois Contemporary Chamber Singers, the UNC Charlotte Percussion Ensemble, and the UNC Charlotte University Chorale. He has composed pieces for professional performers such as Anthony Stoops, Scott Christian, Wolfgang David, David Gompper, Jeffery Lyman, Nick Petrella, Erin Lesser, Greg Beyer, Mira Frisch, and Paul Sharpe.
Recordings of Allemeier’s music are available on the Albany, Capstone, and Vox Novus labels. His music is published by Carl Fischer Music Publishers, C. Alan Publications, and European American Music. He received his Ph.D. in Composition from the University of Iowa, his Master of Music in Composition from Northwestern University, and his Bachelor of Music in Performance from Augustana College. He has studied in Europe at the 41st and 42nd Internationalen Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt, Germany, and the 6th International Composition Course in Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic. He currently teaches composition and music theory at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Composer/performer Craig Bove earned his undergraduate degree at Northwestern’s School of Music and completed his formal training with a PhD at SUNY Buffalo, studying under such New Music luminaries as Morton Feldman, LeJaren Hiller, Donald Erb, and Bernard Rands. His compositions have been performed throughout the country in both live performances and radio broadcasts. He has served as the conductor of the Middlebury Wind Ensemble and CPCC Opera Theater pit orchestra and has performed, conducted and presided over concerts of new and standard repertoire including performances at the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, the BOCA Art Center in New York, KPFA Radio in San Francisco, and NPR Radio affiliates in New York, Vermont and California. The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra has recently premiered “Release” for chamber orchestra.
Bove’s own music has evolved from repetition and overlapping of cycles of events at various structural levels into what now could be described broadly as a pairing of poetic and prosaic, regularly and irregularly recurring events and the rigorously controlled and the freely conceived. His most recent works have taken as their sources the model of a perpetually evolving psychological narrative as an associate/guide to the persistence of nascent sound. He has written for orchestra, various combinations of chamber groups, and vocal ensembles.
At CPCC, Bove teaches music theory, music history, composition and is president of the Out Of Bounds Ensemble for New Music. He also serves as chair for the music and dance departments.
Composer Mara Gibson is originally from Charlottesville, VA, graduated from Bennington College, and completed her Ph.D. at SUNY Buffalo. She has received grants and honors from the American Composer’s Forum, the Banff Center, Louisiana Division of the Arts, ArtsKC, Meet the Composer, the Kansas Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts, the International Bass Society, ASCAP, and the John Hendrick Memorial Commission, Virginia Center for Creative Arts, the MacDowell Colony and Yale University. Internationally renowned ensembles and soloists have performed her music throughout the United States, Canada, South America, Asia, and Europe. Dr. Gibson has taught at the UMKC Conservatory as Associate Professor for the past ten years where she was the founder of the UMKC Composition Workshop and co-director/founder of ArtSounds. For 2017-18, she has accepted a Visiting Assistant Professor position at Louisiana State University. She released her first compilation CD ArtIfacts May 2015. Her second CD Skyborn released in November 2017 through PARMA Recordings.
Dorothy Hindman’s music, a blend of punk/grunge with a spectralist sensibility, has been described as “bright with energy and a lilting lyricism” (New York Classical Review), “dramatic, highly strung” (Fanfare), “varied, utterly rich and sung with purpose and heart” (Huffington Post), “powerful and skillfully conceived” (The Miami Herald), “music of terrific romantic gesture” (The Buffalo News) and “one of the hopes of the present chamber music” (Kulturni Magazin UNI).
Her over 350 performances span 30 states and 16 countries, including major venues such as Carnegie Hall, the United Nations, Boston’s Jordan Hall, the American Academy in Rome, Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw, Berlin’s BKA-Theater, and Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center. Hindman’s music has been commissioned and performed by the world’s top new music performers including most recently the Bent Frequency Chamber Ensemble (Atlanta), Pulse Ensemble (Miami), Empire City Men’s Chorus (NYC), virtuosi including Bang-on-a-Can’s bassist Robert Black, cellist Craig Hultgren, guitarist Paul Bowman, percussionist Stuart Gerber, the Caraval Quartet (NYC), the Goliard Ensemble (NYC), the Atlas Saxophone Quartet (Chicago), the Corona Guitar Kvartet (Denmark), and orchestras including the Women’s Philharmonic Orchestra (reading session), the Alabama Symphony, the Brevard Symphony Orchestra, and the North Florida Symphony Orchestra.
A native of Miami, Florida, Hindman is Associate Professor of Composition at the Frost School of Music, University of Miami. She has been new music critic for the Miami Herald and South Florida Classical Review, and hosted WVUM’s Po Mo Show, devoted to a post-modern mix of classical music written since 1980.
Kyong Mee Choi, composer, organist, painter, and visual artist, received several prestigious awards and grants including John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, Robert Helps Prize, Aaron Copland Award, Illinois Arts Council Fellowship, First prize of ASCAP/SEAMUS Award, Second prize at VI Concurso Internacional de Música Eletroacústica de São Paulo, Honorary Mentions from Musique et d’Art Sonore Electroacoustiques de Bourges, Musica Nova, Society of Electroacoustic Music of Czech Republic, Luigi Russolo International Competition, and Destellos Competition. She was a Finalist of the Contest for the International Contemporary Music Contest “Citta’ di Udine and Concurso Internacional de Composicai eletroacoustica in Brazil among others. Her music was published at CIMESP (São Paulo, Brazil), SCI, EMS, ERM media, SEAMUS, and Détonants Voyages (Studio Forum, France).
Ravello records published her multimedia opera, THE ETERNAL TAO, which was supported by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship and Roosevelt University. Aucourant Records published her CD, SORI, featuring her eight compositions for solo instrument and electronics. The project was supported by the IAS Artist Project Grant from the Illinois Arts Council. She is a Head of Music Composition and an Associate Professor of Music Composition at Roosevelt University in Chicago where she teaches composition and electro-acoustic music. Born in Vancouver, Canada in 1953, Joel Hoffman received degrees from the University of Wales and the Juilliard School. He is a member of a distinguished musical family that includes brothers Gary and Toby, cellist and conductor, and Deborah, harpist. Honors include a major prize from the American Academy-Institute of Arts and Letters, two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Bearns Prize of Columbia University, a BMI Award, ASCAP awards since 1977, and three American Music Center grants.
Hoffman’s works draw from such diverse sources as Eastern European folk musics, Chinese traditional music and bebop, and are pervaded by a sense of lyricism and rhythmic vitality. They have been performed by many ensembles such as the Chicago Symphony Brass, the BBC Orchestra of Wales, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, members of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Cleveland Quartet, the Shanghai Quartet, the Brentano Quartet and the Golub-Kaplan-Carr Trio. “Self-Portrait with Gebirtig”, for cello and orchestra, has been performed in New York, Paris, Tel Aviv, Los Angeles, San Jose (Costa Rica), Washington, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Santa Barbara, Kronberg (Germany), and has been recorded by the Berlin Radio Symphony, the Kiev Chamber Orchestra as well as by the Slovenian Radio Symphony in Lubliana. Hoffman’s opera, “The Memory Game”, received its first performances in May of 2003. The opera examines the destructive nature of war, as seen from the perspective of Mordechai Gebirtig, the Polish-Jewish sogwriter from Krakow. The opera’s libretto was written by Dutch novelist Henk Romijn Meijer. “Brave Old Mordechai” (based on material from the opera) was recently taken on tour in Holland by the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and Brave Old World. His concerto for dizi (Chinese bamboo flute) and dizi orchestra, “The Dizi in my Life”, was performed at the Southbank Centre in London in 2014, and his second work including dizi orchestra, “sizzle 丝竹” for solo violin, solo cello, yunluo (Chinese gongs) and dizi orchestra, was performed at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing in 2015.
